Random yard pic of the week: Heliconia

Heliconia flowers in border

I started fiddling with my cellphone cam again since my son showed me that I can change the resolution etc. etc. Yeah, yeah, I've had it for a year and a half and didn't figure out I could do something about the teensy tiny images I've been getting. That's what children are for - to point out the blatantly obvious to their technically challenged parents.

Took a bunch of yard shots but most are badly pixellated (my son's word) so I'll have to tinker a bit to get the hang of things. The one above is of my mother's heliconias in a border, mixed with a miscellany of other plants that all grow happily together. Too happily, if anything. Ignore it all for a few weeks and it turns to jungle.

Flowerpot, I did! I also took last week off work. A week wasn't enough - but it certainly helped!

Lovely photo.

My children can't get over how utterly useless I am with technology. I've had the same phone for 4 years and use it simply to make/receive calls/texts. I don't know what to do with the pictures, or music.

Debs, I'm finally learning about the pictures but the music settings are still a mystery. Don't know when I'll go there.

Vacations are just a different type of work :)

I used to see these growing wild near Manzanilla Beach and Mayaro but can't say if people have been cutting them for flower arrangements or to make way for smelters.

akalol, when I was a child and we visited Manzanilla my mother would always urge my father to stop the car so she could get out and pick these. Years later they sort of exploded on the cut flower scene and I started seeing them in gardens. Lots of hybrid versions around too. Probably imported.

Beautiful flowers. What do they smell like?

Forgive me, I am useless with plants.

Fia, they don't have a noticeable scent. The brightly coloured parts are actually bracts, from which the tiny flowers peep out. Related to cannas and bananas.
