Random yard shots, March 2010 edition

The drought has been terrible and the hills are burning, but in my mother's parched garden these plants continue to pleasure the eyes and the spirit.

Ground orchid

Another orchid in a hanging basket. Don't know the name of this one...

Or this...

Oncidium or bee orchid growing happily in rubble in a basket

Marigolds in the background. Phlox and chives in the foreground. Yeah, my mom mixes it up, vegs and flowers in the same beds and borders.

What a sight to see on this cold, blustery morning.

Makes me wish for rain since I am seeing only brown. Excellent photos!

I wish I could do a bit of a swap and send you some of our rain for a glimpse of sunshine. It's been very wet and windy here today.

JJ, I love the purple myself.

Sue, they are wonderful, aren't they? Almost too beautiful to be real.

Lane, hope the blustery weather is giving way to milder fare.

akalol, I too wish for rain. The hills are brown and almost obscured by the smoke from bush fires. It's painful to watch, but a fitting backdrop to the aridity of the local politics, wouldn't you say?

Chris, we'll gratefully accept your offer of rain. Our reservoirs are dangerously depleted.

at gorgeous DOF in your photos may I ask what lens you are used here?

Believe it or not, it was not a macro lens or anything that I shot with here. It's the 24-105L lens from Canon, and all were shot zoomed right in at 105mm at f/4 to achieve the best DOF.

WizzyTheStick, welcome to the blog! I've asked the photo-takeouter to respond to your technical question...

R.S.V.P. Studios, thanks for responding! You know that all I understood in there was that DOF means depth of field, right? :) Great shots!
