Quote of the Day

"Hypothetical numbers are great to send into rhetorical battle."

Jim McCulloch, on his blog Stone Bridge, in the post Ken Burns's War which, among other things, takes issue with Burns's estimates of the great numbers of lives that would have been lost if the atomic bombs had not been deployed at the end of World War II.

Opperation Coronet, I think that was the name of the invasion plan for Japan. Massive infantry assault of almost WWI proportions landing at several points simultaneusly combined with saturation bombing. I remember debating this whole thing with great emotion and little research when I was in high school. It was a hot topic on the 25th anniversary. Personally, I don't think either solutoin was good.

I agree. War, to me, is always a lose-lose operation.
